The Story of the Pan-Homenetmen Games

Every four years, excitement ripples through the Armenian diaspora as thousands gather for one of the most anticipated events on the global Armenian athletic and cultural calendar — the Pan-Homenetmen Games.

What Are the Pan-Homenetmen Games?

The Pan-Homenetmen Games are a global sporting and cultural celebration organized by the Central Committee of Homenetmen, an Armenian sports and scouting organization founded in 1918. Homenetmen’s mission is to foster the physical, moral, and intellectual development of Armenian youth, uniting them through sport, discipline, and national identity.
The Games stand as one of the most powerful expressions of this mission.

Who Attends?

Held primarily in Yerevan, Armenia, the Games bring together thousands of Homenetmen athletes, scouts, volunteers, and supporters from across the globe — from cities like Los Angeles, Beirut, Paris, Buenos Aires, Sydney, Aleppo, and Montreal, among many others.

Participants are mostly youth and young adults who compete in a wide range of sports, including:

  • Basketball

  • Soccer

  • Track & Field

  • Swimming

  • Volleyball

  • Chess

  • Table Tennis

Beyond the athletes, the Games are attended by coaches, families, alumni, and dignitaries — including representatives from the Armenian government and the Homenetmen Central Committee. It’s as much a cultural homecoming as it is a sports tournament.

When and Where Does It Happen?

The Pan-Homenetmen Games take place every four years, typically in the summer, and most often in Yerevan. The event usually spans a week to ten days, featuring both competitions and vibrant cultural programming.

The opening ceremony is a breathtaking display of pride and unity — complete with a torch relay, flag bearers representing each region, traditional Armenian music and dance performances, and speeches that inspire the next generation to carry Homenetmen’s values forward.

What Is the Goal?

While medals are awarded and champions celebrated, the true purpose of the Games extends far beyond the competition:

  • Unity: Strengthening the bonds of the global Armenian community in their ancestral homeland.

  • Cultural Connection: Deepening ties between the diaspora and Armenia through shared traditions, language, and heritage.

  • Personal Growth: Encouraging discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership among young Armenians.

Participants also have the opportunity to visit historical landmarks, attend educational seminars, and engage in community service projects — creating meaningful connections with local Armenian communities.

The Legacy

For many, the Pan-Homenetmen Games are a defining chapter in their lives. The experience builds lifelong friendships, strengthens Armenian identity, and inspires a renewed sense of belonging and purpose. Whether on the soccer field or in the stands, every cheer, handshake, and shared moment helps build a stronger, more united Armenian future.

As one participant beautifully put it:

“We may come from different countries, speak different languages, and wear different uniforms — but here, we are one team. One nation.”

That is the enduring spirit of the Pan-Homenetmen Games.
